Punjab Rains

After a long dry spell, rains have commenced over Punjab. Now also, we expect moderate to heavy rains to continue today over the eastern districts of the state including Chandigarh, Patiala, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Roopnagar, Jalandhar.

During the last 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rains occurred over parts of Punjab. Patiala recorded very heavy rains of 178 mm, followed by Ludhiana at 92 mm, Chandigarh also saw good rains of 30 mm, Kapurthala 7.5 mm, Pathankot 12 mm, Amritsar also recorded light rains of 6 mm, and Anandpur Sahib 3.5 mm.

However, these rains are expected to be short lived and by tomorrow weather will go mostly dry with only isolated rains in some parts. The foothills of Punjab including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala may get scattered rains tomorrow as well, but intensity of rains will go down.

Thereafter, weather will become dry as the axis of Monsoon Trough will remain south of its normal position, further reducing the rainfall activity.

Punjab was rain surplus until first half of August but since then, weather went dry. Thus, as of today, the state is rain deficient by 6 percent and with lesser rains in the coming days, this deficient figure is not likely to go up.
