Chennai post

The state of Tamil Nadu recorded widespread rainfall activity during the last 24 hours. Many southern and coastal parts received moderate rains along with few heavy spells. In fact, talking about the capital city, Chennai’s Minambakkam Observatory recorded 60 mm of rain.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Friday, Periyakulam recorded heavy rain to the tune of 93 mm, followed by Parangipettai 18 mm, Tuticorin New Port 14 mm, Pamban 10 mm, Coimbatore and Tondi 6 mm, Kodaikanal 3 mm and Thiruttani 2 mm.

As the situation is favorable for withdrawal of Monsoon from the entire country shortly, thus we expect Northeast Monsoon to set up over the southern peninsula.

At present, a cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal, close to Sri Lanka persists. A trough is extending from this system towards southern parts of Tamil Nadu Coast. Along with this, northeasterly winds are blowing over the state.

Due to all these weather systems, we expect moderate to heavy rains to continue over the coastal parts of Tamil Nadu along with many western and southern parts. Meanwhile, the northern districts will receive only light rainfall activity.

Chennai will continue to receive moderate rains during the next 24 hours. However, rainfall activity will reduce over the capital city thereafter.

Places such as Tuticorin, Ooty, Coimbatore will experience heavy rainfall activity.

Rains in Tamil Nadu are expected to decrease gradually over most parts of state and especially the northern districts. However, the southern parts will continue with light to moderate rains for next 48 hours.
