Hills Article

Like rest parts of the country, hilly states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh have been witnessing above normal temperatures. Maximum temperatures have been at least 4-5 notches above the average mean across both the states.

On Thursday, Srinagar recorded day maximum at 23.6°C, Batote 25.5°C, Gulmarg 12.5°C, all of them four degrees above normal. Pahalgam saw day maximum at 21.7°C, five degrees above normal. In Himachal Pradesh, Manali observed day maximum at 24.6°C, five notches above normal. Shimla was even worse with six degrees above average at 25.2°C.

However, hilly region now likely to see some relief. According to Skymet Weather, a fresh Western Disturbance is marked over Jammu and Kashmir. In wake of this, light rains with few moderate spells are likely over the Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during the next 48 hours.

As we proceed further, both the frequency and intensity of Western Disturbance becomes less. Moreover, these systems also start travelling in the higher latitudes. Thus, they are not capable of giving any intense weather activities during this time of the year.

April 14 onwards, the affecting Western Disturbance would clear the region towards east. With this, rain and thundershowers over the hilly region would also recede. In fact, the weather would become clear and temperatures might rise again.

Weather models are indicating towards the arrival of another Western Disturbance around April 16. Weathermen are of the view that would be an active one, which would give some good rains and thundershowers. It would be during this spell when there would be significant drop in mercury.
