61 mm rain in Kolkata in 3 hours drops mercury to 24 degrees, more heavy rains in offing

Updated on May 22 at 6:15 PM: As predicted by Skymet Weather, Kolkata has recorded very heavy rains to the tune of 61 mm in span of mere three hours from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Not only this, these heavy showers are still going on over the region along with some squally winds.

According to weathermen, the radar showers that intense rains and thundershowers will continue to lash the region for another couple of hours.

In wake of these pre-Monsoon activities, the weather has gone extremely pleasant. The maximum temperature, which had reached 34°C in the afternoon, witnessed a steep drop and is presently settling at 24°C.

Further, we expect weather conditions to remain conducive for more spells of rain and thundershowers during the next 24 hours as well.

Updated on May 22 at 2:15 PM:The city of joy Kolkata recorded good pre-Monsoon rains in the past few days though the weather remained dry during the last two days. The city of Kolkata recorded 21 mm of rain on May 19.

As per Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is prevailing over East Bihar and another cyclonic circulation is persisting over the eastern parts of Assam. In fact, a trough is also running from Sub Himalayan West Bengal to Gangetic West Bengal. Moreover, moisture incursion is taking place from the Bay of Bengal over the districts of Gangetic West Bengal.

In the wake of these combined weather phenomena, thunderclouds have formed over Gangetic West Bengal turning the sky condition cloudy to overcast. Districts such as Midnapore, Bankura, Murshidabad, Birbhum, and Kolkata are expected to witness rain and thundershower activities today.

In fact, the northern parts of Kolkata may record one or two heavy spells also. These pre-Monsoon are likely to be accompanied by strong winds and lightning strikes. Adjoining stations like Hugli and Burdwan may also observe violent thunderstorm activities during the next few hours.

As per weathermen, conditions seem to be favourable for weather activities to continue until tomorrow over Gangetic West Bengal. The temperatures have already dropped due to clouding over Kolkata. A further drop in the temperatures is expected. Thus, night in Kolkata and adjoining regions would be pleasant today.
