Weather in this period is showing extremely to very heavy snowfall and rain, overcast conditions, drop in days temperatures and speeding winds that will continue for next two to three days over the Western Himalayan region. Heavy to very heavy snowfall and rain is expected at a few places in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next 48 hours. One or two places in these states could have massive snowfall.
Rain in Delhi including other parts of northwest plains would intensify during the next 24 to 48 hours. Many places in Delhi, Punjab. Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan will witness rainfall during this period. One or two places could experience hailstorm(rain with ice) in the region. Rain will reduce thereafter.
The strong Western Disturbance is close to Jammu & Kashmir. The weather system originates in the Mediterranean Sea and consists of warm moist winds that travels eastnortheastwards. After Afghanistan and Pakistan, the weather system hits Jammu & Kashmir where warms winds collide with cool winds.
These encounters of winds bring snowfall in higher altitudes as the temperatures remain low and the plains receive rainfall as temperatures remain relatively higher compared to the hills. The amount of snowfall and rain associated with the Western Disturbance depends on the strength of the Western Disturbances.
Western Disturbances are an integral part of winter in India. A number of Western Disturbances occur and affect the northwestern parts of India. Not only the stay of Western Disturbances but also the exit of the weather system plays a significant role in severity of winter thereafter. After its exit, winds in India, especially over north, central, east and some times up to south, come from snowfall areas so they bring down the minimum temperatures to increase cold.
Same weather conditions would thrive over north and northwest India after the next 48 hours as the strong Western Disturbance post snowfall will leave the region. Cool winds will start blowing over northern central and eastern India and a spell of severe cold conditions will make a come back.
