Rain in Northeast India to reduce as possible cyclonic storm intensifies

May 13, 2016 12:25 PM |

Northeast India rainsThis year pre-Monsoon showers began lashing Northeastern states from the month of April itself when most parts of the country were reeling under heatwave conditions.

In May, pre-Monsoon activities picked up pace over entire country including Northeast India. This part of the country witnessed good rain and thundershowers throughout the month barring a lull period between May 9 and 11. Only isolated activities have occurred during that time.

As have been reiterated by Skymet, the rain intensity has picked up pace and this region will continue to witness light to moderate rainfall activities till May 17 or 18. Thereafter, rain intensity will decrease significantly and weather condition will remain mostly dry from May 18 to 22.

During last 24 hours, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh received 5.5 mm of rainfall and Pasighat 5 mm. Jorhat in Assam received good rains to the tune of 24.6 mm and Tinsukia just 10 mm.

This change inscenario could be attributed to the development of strong weather system overBay of Bengal which may intensify into a cyclonic storm. Click here to read the full story, Indian seas become turbulent as Monsoon 2016 approaches

Winds as well as moisture, will concentrate around that weather system, cutting off moisture flow to the Northeastern states. By May 21 or 22, we expect this weather system to degenerate. Thus, rainfall activities will resume over the Northeastern States.
