The state of Uttar Pradesh was experiencing dry weather conditions since the last few days. However, western parts of Uttar Pradesh had received few spells of good rains therefore the state’s rain deficiency was dwindling somewhere at 10% as on January 22.

During the last 24 hours, however, moderate to heavy rains have occurred over the state therefore we expect this deficiency to fade away as well. Moreover, there are chances of West Uttar Pradesh to even become surplus in rains by a few percent. East Uttar Pradesh was also running on the same lines and the rain deficiency here stood near to 90 percent.

However, as of now, scattered rains have commenced over this region of the state as well. In the last 24 hours, many places of Central and East Uttar Pradesh have received scattered light to moderate rains. While Lucknow received 13 mm of rains, Bahraich, Fursatganj and Hamirpur received 3 mm each, Varanasi and Gorakhpur saw 4 mm rainfall whereas Kanpur, Bandha, Orai, Varanasi and Ghazipur received light rains.

We further expect these scattered rains and thundershower activities to continue with isolated hailstorm over many places in East Uttar Pradesh including Allahabad. There are good chances that, Kumbh Mela might get affected due to the rains.

These rains will continue for the next 24 hours before the weather gets cleared yet again. After this, yet another intense spell is being forecast on January 25 and 26 and will cover Central and East Uttar Pradesh. During that time, light to moderate with isolated heavy showers are expected over the region. Hailstorm might be at chance along with. These rains will surely lead to a significant improvement in the rain deficiency of the state.

Coming onto Bihar- the state was running dry since a lot of days. Since the beginning of the year, the rain deficiency has been consistently at 98%. However, last 24 hours came as a relief as the region saw light rains in places like Patna and Muzaffarpur.

Moreover, further as well, we expect scattered rains between January 24 and 26 in many parts of Bihar. Intensity will not be heavy this time and the rains will be mostly patchy. Relief from dry weather will follow the rainy spell. Also, soil moisture is expected to increase at this time which will surely be a good sign for farmers. Winter chill is expected to intensify over the area thereafter as day temperatures might fall by six to seven degree Celsius.

Winter is mainly a dry season for Bihar until and unless some strong Western Disturbance moves across the foothills of Himalayas or either any significant weather system develops over Bay of Bengal, moving inland. However, formation of a system is very rare in this season.
