Rain in Odisha

The state of Odisha has remained rain deficient by 93% so far. Although, in wake of the Trough extending from North interior Odisha to South Andhra Pradesh, light scattered rains have occurred over parts of Odisha such as Bhawanipatna, Bhubaneswar and Keongjhagarh during last 24 hours, but these rains have not resulted significantly in bringing down the rain deficiency figures.

Taking about data, in the span of 24 hours, Bhawanipatna has recorded 3 mm of rainfall while trace rains have been observed over Bhubaneswar and Keongjhagarh.

Now, we expect this trough to give scattered light to moderate rains over Odisha during next 24 hours. Although these rains will not impact much, but some benefit in terms of soil moisture restoration is expected. Thereafter, this system will get weaken and weather will go completely dry once again.

Generally, Odisha receives rain due to the formation of the weather system over Bay of Bengal. This system travels in northwest direction in Indian coast across Odisha. Sometimes, formation of off shore Trough also gives scattered rains over Odisha. However, during winter season, intensity of rain oscillate between light and moderate. Moreover, January is the leanest period in terms of rainfall.

A completely opposite picture is witnessed during pre- Monsoon season. During pre Monsoon time, many parts of Odisha go through violent thunderstorm activities popularly known as ‘Kal Baisakhi’ in the local language.
