Chennai Rains

The city of Chennai has been receiving light rains for the past one week now. As a matter of fact, no heavy rains have been seen in the city since July 26. If anything these rains are bringing in a slight relief from the ongoing grim water situation over the city which has become a national concern recently.

During the last 24 hours, the city recorded 23.5 mm of rains while Chennai Airport received 28.9 mm.

The rains began at 20:30 hrs in the evening. As of now, intermittent light to moderate rain is continuing over the city.

These rains are being witnessed in the presence of a Cyclonic Circulation which has formed over Coastal Tamil Nadu as an upper air system. A Trough is also extending along the East coast.

At the same time, the city of Tirupati has also received moderate rains amounting to 30.8 mm due to the same system.

These rains are expected to continue for the day until tomorrow early morning in both the cities. The day temperatures are likely to remain close to 28 to 30°C.

Tamil Nadu is a rain shadow area and witnesses very less rains during the Southwest Monsoon season. This region, however, receives good rains during the Northeast Monsoon season.
