Rains to increase over the northeastern states after September 10

Active monsoon conditions prevailed over many parts of East India especially over Arunachal Pradesh, East Assam, Nagaland and adjoining Meghalaya, during the last 24 hours.

During the last 24 hours significant rainfall activities were witnessed in the northeastern parts with Gangtok receiving 12 mm of rain, followed by Tadong 3.8 mm, Cherrapunji 5.2 mm and Lengpui 6.4 mm.

Rainfall activities with moderate to heavy rains will continue over most parts of the state during next 48 hours as well. Sikkim and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over isolated places.

As south/southwesterly winds are prevailing over the region, rainfall activity will significantly increase from September 10 onwards. during this time flood-like situation may also develop over some parts during these days.

If we look at the state-wise figures for the season Assam is rain-deficient by 23%, Meghalaya by 41%, Nagaland by 12%, Manipur by 53%, Tripura by 19%, whereas Mizoram and Sikkim are rain-surplus by 4% and 9% respectively.
