Rainy Weekend For Mumbai: Heavy Rains Likely
Jun 11, 2025, 1:00 PM | Skymet Weather TeamMumbai had the last burst of monsoon at the time of early onset on 26th May 2025. Thereafter, the rains have been few and far between, and typical monsoon showers have given a miss. Weather has generally remained dry for the last four days.
Absolutely light sprinkles are expected over the next 48 hours. It means the city will gather about 90 mm of rainfall in the first two weeks of June, which is rather scanty against the monthly normal of 493.1 mm. However, the conditions are building up to have some consolatory heavy showers on the approaching weekend.
Mumbai gets monsoon showers as and when the weather systems form over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and move inland. There are two back-to-back monsoon circulations coming up over BoB, which are likely to revive the seasonal rains over and around the city. These weather systems are not as strong as those normally seen during the onset phase of monsoon over the country. Yet, these will trigger some comforting and decent showers over the weekend, between 13th and 15th June, and possibly another round next week as well.
A cyclonic circulation is already in place over BoB, in the proximity of the coastline of South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh. This circulation will move inland over Telangana and North Karnataka tomorrow. Here, it meets up with a pre-existing long north-south trough from East Madhya Pradesh to interiors of Tamil Nadu. Tomorrow, heavy rainfall is likely over North and Coastal Karnataka, South Konkan, Goa, and the peripherals of Telangana and Kerala. The next day, with the shift of the system along the West Coast, the heavy rainfall belt will migrate to cover the entire Konkan and Goa and parts of South Madhya Maharashtra. This is the time when Mumbai is expected to have a heavy downpour, starting on 13th June. The spell of heavy rains will go through the subsequent 48 hours also, albeit with reduced intensity and spread.
La Nina Update: ENSO, IOD Both Neutral; MJO Passive Too
During this period, another monsoon system as a cyclonic circulation will form over BoB. Like the last system, its movement inland will accentuate the monsoon stream along the West Coast. The Konkan region in general, and Mumbai in particular, will have another round of moderate to heavy rains. Practically, Mumbai will have intermittent, moderate to heavy showers during the next week. The rains are likely to ease out after 20th June 2025. Mumbai is expected to recover from sparse rainfall and accumulate enough rains to reach at least halfway to the monthly normal.
