dust storm in Rajasthan

Due to rains and dust storm in Barmer, Rajasthan, at least 14 people were reported as dead, while 50 injured after a pandaal collapsed, yesterday. The incident occurred when the localites had assembled to listen to Ram Katha. The injured were immediately taken to the hospital.

According to Khinv Singh, Additional Superintendent of Police, “The pandaal was uprooted by the strong gusty winds and subsequent rains. The incident took place around 4:30, at the time when the local people were gathered to listen to Ram Katha.

According to our meteorologists, violent dust storm needs to be blamed for the incident. The district was experiencing strong gusty winds to the tune of 90 kmph, when the incident took place. Moreover, rains made the situation even worse. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Barmer has recorded 17-18 mm of rainfall. These activities were a result of a Cyclonic Circulation, which was supplying moisture from the Arabian Sea. Moreover, high temperatures, above 40 degree mark made the conditions favourable for triggering dust storm and rains.

Forecast: Due to overnight rains and increased cloud cover, the temperatures are expected to drop to some extent in Barmer. However, rain and thundershower stand a chance today as well. However, dust storm activities would remain on the lower side and the chances of strong winds are ruled out.

Ashok Gehlot, Chief Minister of Rajasthan, has announced compensation worth Rs five lakh for the families of those who lost their lives, while Rs two lakh would be provided to those who are injured.

Social media was flooded with the news of a tent collapsing in Barmer. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot too expressed their deepest condolences to the bereaved families.
