Republic Day preparations being held amid chilly weather in North India

January 22, 2014 2:27 PM |

It has been a freezing January in Delhi and the rest of North India and winter isn’t over yet. With widespread heavy rain pouring in on Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, days became cold and maximums dropped by 4 to 7 notches, settling below 16⁰C. People shivered all day as it led to power cuts as well.

And now that the rains have started to subside, cold days will be followed by very cold nights. While the maximums will start to rise gradually, nearing 20⁰C, nights will once again be cold, between 6 to 8⁰C in Delhi and adjoining areas. Parts of Punjab, closer to the hills, i.e. Amritsar, Pathankot, Jalandhar and Chandigarh could see minimums settle at around 4⁰C or even lesser.

Minimums will drop as icy winds will again flow from the snow clad mountains of Jammu and Kashmir down to the plains of North India.

“By virtue of being closer towards the end of January, we won’t see the minimums drop to subzero or even to 1⁰C or 2⁰C. Nights will undoubtedly be very cold but obviously not as cold as they were or how they usually are in December end or January beginning. Though we repeatedly say, this doesn’t mean winter is over. Yes the biting cold weather will not bother now, which claimed many lives in North and Northwest India in the last two months,” shared a senior meteorologist at Skymet Weather.

Braving the chill, fog and the intense cold weather in Delhi for the last two weeks, rehearsals are on in full swing for the 65th Republic Day. Our forecasts show, the elaborate parade on D- Day could be held amid a very cold and foggy morning.

Fog in Delhi returns soon after rain because there is enough moisture in the atmosphere. We are studying the weather patterns with a keen eye on fog and will keep updating our readers about the weather in Delhi as well the weather in North India on Republic Day. Whether fog will be dense enough to block the view of those who have come to watch the parade or not people, is yet to be seen”, added the meteorologist.
