Schools and colleges shut in Bareilly, Saharanpur, Lucknow amidst severe cold day conditions

December 18, 2019 10:11 AM |

Today, multiple cities in Northwest India including Amritsar, Sri Ganganagar, Bhatinda woke up to dense fog. Visibility dropped to a very poor level of zero meters in these places. Delhi, on the other hand, remained fog-free for the day due to moderate northwesterly winds blowing in the region.

Cities in the Northwest plains like Delhi, Amritsar, Lucknow and Bareilly are already witnessing cold day conditions. Cold wave-like conditions have intensified in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Prayagraj, following last week's heavy rainfall in several parts of the state.

All schools in Bareilly and Saharanpur till Class 8, will remain closed for the next few days. Apart from this, schools and colleges in the Mau district are likely to remain closed till further orders. Meanwhile, in Lucknow, the class timings have been rescheduled. The order also states that strict action will be taken against institutions found violating the order.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan’s only hill station Mount Abu recorded a minimum temperature of 1.4 degree Celsius on Tuesday night.

However, relief is in sight as a fresh Western Disturbance is set to approach the northern hills of India by tonight. Presently, the system is over North Pakistan and adjoining Afghanistan as an upper air system. As a warm front is soon approaching, this is going to result in rise in both minimum and maximum temperatures. However, northerly cool winds are still persisting over the Northwest Plains.

As clouding is likely over most parts of Northwest India today, we expect cold day conditions to become mild and even abate some places today onward.

Some parts of Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana have already begun to observe a rise in temperatures, but the weather in the national capital Delhi remained unchanged. Morning temperatures are expected to drop marginally by one to two degrees over some parts.

Talking about the forecast, the density of fog in the plains of Northwest India is likely to reduce further and cold day conditions are likely to abate during in the next 24 to 48 hours as the Western Disturbance is likely to affect the region. Isolated places in extreme North Punjab and Haryana may observe light rain and thunderclouds on the night of December 20 and 21.

Weather will remain mainly dry over most parts in the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the air quality in Delhi might improve marginally as the sun is expected to appear for the day.
