Severe air quality and dense fog engulfs Delhi, rains likely today

December 21, 2019 9:36 AM |

Dense fog in the national capital led to visibility in Delhi dropping to 50 m in the early morning hours today. Now, however, the situation is likely to improve shortly in the next one or two hours.

According to a recent statement rolled out by airport officials, around 46 flights were diverted due to dense fog at Delhi airport till December 20 midnight. On Friday alone, 12 flights were diverted due to minimum visibility at the runway at Delhi airport till 08:30 pm.

Apart from the dense fog, cold continues to widen its grip in Delhi for the last few days. Today, however, the city woke up to a warmer morning than yesterday with the minimum temperatures being recorded 2 degrees above normal. This rise in temperatures can be attributed to the thick cover of clouding engulfing the area. Today, both minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to increase even further over the city.

At present, a Western Disturbance as an upper air system persists over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. Its induced Cyclonic Circulation lies over North of Delhi and adjoining parts of Haryana. Thus, short spells of light rain and thundershower activities can be observed in some parts of Delhi and NCR today.

Besides this, the overall air quality index in Delhi recorded 429 today morning that falls under the 'severe' category. Pollution level over the area is likely to remain very bad towards morning hours until early noon. This may, however, improve significantly after 12:00 hrs.

Tomorrow, we expect moderate to dense fog to persist over almost entire Delhi NCR. Minimum temperatures might drop. Maximum temperatures will remain the same, however. A mainly partly cloudy sky with dry weather conditions to prevail tomorrow.
