Delhi's air quality was at the season's worst as of today. The main contribution came from the smoke from stubble burning in the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana that have turned the city into a "gas chamber" leaving people breathless.

A thick blanket of haze hung low over the city leading to nil visibility, thereby affecting flight and train operations. Even the underground metro stations in the city were affected making it difficult to breathe, turning eyes watery and producing burning sensation.

With this, the Indian Medical Association declared a ‘public health emergency’ and appealed to the Delhi government to issue a health advisory for high risk people that include children, the elderly, pregnant women and those suffering from respiratory and heart ailments.

The air quality index was in the 'severe' category for the second time this year with a score of 448 in a scale of 500. The last time the AQI index had a lower reading at 403 when Diwali fireworks had triggered high pollution October 20.
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal asked his deputy and education minister Manish Sisodia to consider shutting schools in the city for a few days in the view of the high pollution levels.
