There is a cyclonic circulation over North Interior Karnataka and a trough extending from this system up to Comorin area across South Interior Karnataka and interiors of Tamil Nadu. This weather system will bring scattered rain and thundershowers over Kerala and isolated rain over interiors of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
During last 24 hours, Thiruvananthapuram received 4 mm of rain and Kozhikode 0.1 mm. Alappuzha and Punalur also received light rains. However, these rains were very light and lasted for short duration only. Therefore, temperatures will remain in higher 30s over Kerala and adjoining areas. Due to increase in moisture content discomfort level is very high over Peninsular India. In spite of temperatures remaining below 40°C, feel-like temperatures will be around low 40s.
We do expect a slight increase in rainfall activities over the above-mentioned areas but they will not be good enough to give long term relief. Normally, pre-Monsoon shower start from the month of April over these areas. However, this time around we have hardly received any pre-Monsoon activities over Peninsular India.
At present Kerala is rainfall deficient by 42%, whereas Tamil Nadu has received scanty rains with 76% deficiency this season (starting from March 1, 2016). South Interior Karnataka is also rainfall deficient to the tune of 65%.
This trend will continue throughout the month of April and this pre-Monsoon season may turn out to be one of the driest over the area.
