Southwest Monsoon advances at a fast pace despite all odds

June 15, 2015 1:58 PM |

Southwest Monsoon Battling against all odds such as the scare of remaining weak this year and unexpected cyclonic storm Ashobaa in the Arabian Sea, Southwest Monsoon is now advancing at a normal pace according to Skymet Meteorology Division in India.

The onset of Southwest Monsoon was delayed by a week when it arrived in Kerala on 5th June. To make things worse, the cyclonic storm Ashobaa swept away all the moisture from Arabian Sea as it moved away from Indian coast and headed towards Oman. Due to this, Monsoon advancement towards West Coast and other parts of Peninsular India was delayed.

However, after the short lull, Southwest Monsoon picked up the pace as fresh Monsoon surge was witnessed along the West Coast around 11th June.

The Southwest Monsoon has now advanced to south Gujarat region, most parts of Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, some parts of Vidarbha, south Chhattisgarh, south Odisha, Rayalaseema, Telangana and most parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh.

According to Skymet, Monsoon 2015 also showcases certain features that make it different from the normal Monsoon pattern.

Monsoon 2015 covered West Madhya Pradesh before it covered East Madhya Pradesh. Ideally, Monsoon covers the eastern parts first.

According to the NLM, the Monsoon began its journey from Kerala towards Mumbai along the West Coast. Afterward, it covered the entire Peninsular India in one go. The coverage, according to Skymet, happens gradually which usually includes coastal and interior parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Monsoon 2015 reached south Gujarat and Saurashtra region within 9 days of its onset. Usually, the Monsoon takes almost 2 weeks to reach this far.

So far, Southwest Monsoon has given evenly distributed rainfall over parts of Peninsular India and Maharashtra. Good widespread rain has been observed in last 24 hours over parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

According to Skymet, Southwest Monsoon is picking up pace and catching up with the normal onset dates. The Monsoon is expected to cover central and eastern parts of India with normal rainfall soon.
