As the deep depression moved northwards, Chennai Rains have eased up paving way for clear weather. During the last 24 hours, Chennai has received close to 50 mm rain. Even though light rain is forecasted to continue in the national capital city of Tamil Nadu, threat of flood like situation had completely abated.

However, parts of coastal Tamil Nadu are likely to keep receiving moderate rain owing to the proximity of the weather system to East Coast of India.

Updated on May 18, 4:52 PM: At present, the weather system is centered at Latitude 13.3°N and Longitude 81°E, around 170 km south-southeast Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu including Chennai have been put on cyclone alert against the inclement weather conditions during the next 48 hours.
The weather system will intensify into a cyclone but it is likely to skirt away from the East Coast and make landfall over Bangladesh.

Updated on May 18 12:25 PM: Yesterday, rains were more intense and Chennai recorded 66 mm rains in just 12 hours between 8:30 am and 8:30 pm. The Minambakkam Observatory in Chennai recorded a whopping 117 mm of rain, which is the highest 24 hour rain in last ten years during the month of May. The last time the city received 109.7 mm rain in, 2010. Chennai rains will continue to affect the capital city for the next two days. Rains will be heavy during next 24 hours. However, the system will move away from the coast and the intensity of rain will reduce thereafter.

The city recorded 71 mm rainfall from 8:30 am on Monday to 8:30 am on Tuesday, rains continued to lash the city even after that. The depression will continue to gain more strength and further intensify into deep depression in next 48 hours which will increase the rain intensity over parts of North Coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai and Puducherry during the next 24 hours.

In last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, the Minambakkam Observatory in Chennai has recorded a whopping 64 mm rain. The capital city has surpassed its monthly average rainfall of 43.9 mm in just 21 hours. Overcast sky conditions can be expected throughout the day. More heavy showers are expected to lash the city during the next 24 hours. Possibility of flooding rain cannot be ruled out. Waterlogging in many areas can also be expected during this period.
