Rain in Tamil NaduAs the Northeast Monsoon revives, coastal parts of Tamil Nadu witnessed light to moderate rain on Monday. While adjoining region of Kerala too recorded good rain.

In a span of last 24 hours, several coastal areas of Tamil Nadu such as Palayamkottai recorded 13 mm of rain, Coonoor 8 mm, Kodaikanal 0.3 mm and Madurai 0.1 mm. In Kerala, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram observed 23.4 mm and 11 mm of rain, respectively.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, scattered rain would continue and good showers are expected in the next 48 hours over coastal parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The rain activity will also extend to parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka and coastal Karnataka, however with reduced intensity.

As a result, maximum temperatures in the coastal areas, which have been settling in mid thirties, are also expected to drop.

The monsoon season is reaching its fag end as we enter into mid of December. Post this, Northeast Monsoon, which usually remains active in the first fortnight of December, starts withdrawing itself and rainfall reduces drastically over southern peninsular region. Extreme southern parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu will still receive some rain. However, by third week onwards the rain becomes minimal.

Moreover by this time, the frequency of cyclonic storms also reduces. These storms in December mostly head for Tamil Nadu coast, which then give good showers over coastal as well as interior regions of the state.
