TN escapes fury of Extremely Severe Cyclone Fani, Chennai records highest maximum since 2016

May 1, 2019 5:06 PM |

Tamil Nadu and Cyclone Fani

The state of Tamil Nadu has escaped the savagery of Extremely Severe Cyclone Fani now over west-cemtral and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. It remained at a safe distance of about 400 km from the coastline. Yesterday, it was abeam Chennai around 2.30 pm as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm.

Generally dense clouding extends up to 200 kms only and because of it’s distance the cloudy sky was a sight over the outer peripherals. Light rains have also been witnessed in Salem, Kanyakumari and Dharmapuri.

With this, system is now shifting north/northwestward, away from Tamil Nadu. Thus, it will not have a significant impact on the weather conditions in Tamil Nadu. However, cloudy sky with medium clouds can give light rains with one or two moderate spells at one or two places but chances are few. The experts have to say that the northern parts of Tamil Nadu like Chennai, Dharmapuri, Vellore and Puducherry would stand a chance to witness these rains. The interior parts of Tamil Nadu cannot be missed from the sight of clouding.

By May 2 onward, clouding would thin out and weather would start clearing up. Tamil Nadu then will be beyond the reach of the storm.

Whenever any system is there, the sea breeze gets mitigated, thus leading to rise in temperatures. This is because the wind flow is directed by the system. On similar grounds, yesterday Chennai recorded 40.1°C which is the second highest till date in the season. The highest for Chennai in the month of April was recorded on April 23, 2016 at 40.8°C.

The northern regions of the state had the same feel in comparison to the southern parts.  The experts have to say that the risen temperatures would not fall immediately as the station would be still governed by the winds.
