Since the past few days, Monsoon rains have been mainly confined to Northeast India including parts of Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur along with some areas of the sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. Presently, the Monsoon trough continues to remain north of its position close to the foothills resulting in heavy to very heavy rains in many cities of the northeast. In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Dhubri received a good 156.8 mm of rain. Also, Gossaigaon like yesterday again recorded rainfall in 3 digit at 232 mm and Golpara witnessed 173.2 mm of rain. Cherrapunji in Meghalaya recorded a whopping 254 mm of rain. The city is almost nearing its monthly average. Dehradun in Uttarakhand has also received a good rain of 100 mm in 24 hours. Motihari in Bihar was another station to have received 3 digit rain at 118 mm along with Cooch Behar in West Bengal where good rain of 143.1 mm was recorded. A cyclonic circulation is presently off the Karnataka coast. The trough extends towards Interior Karnataka. This system has given good rains in parts of Andhra Pradesh. For instance, in a span of 24 hours both Utukuru and Kadapa received 101 mm of rain each. In the next few days, the spread and amount of rain from Northeast India will reduce as the axis of the Monsoon trough will shift southwards, i.e. back to its normal position. However, the conditions will remain conducive over Indo-Gangetic plain region for the next 24 hours. Image Credit: thehindu.com
