Thunderstorm-Dust-Storm-Heavy Showers Disrupt Air Operations In Delhi: More Rainfall Today-Tomorrow
Key Takeaways:
- Severe pre-monsoon weather disrupted Delhi-NCR with heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds.
- Flight operations were impacted, with 11 flights diverted to nearby airports.
- More rain and thunderstorm activity is expected over Delhi today and tomorrow.
- Temperatures will stay below normal through the weekend before rising again next week.
Typical pre-monsoon weather activity lashed Delhi and its suburbs during the afternoon and evening hours yesterday. Another spell developed around midnight and continued into the wee hours of this morning. This was the first widespread weather activity of the season, severe in nature and accompanied by strong gusty winds, thunderstorms, heavy rain and lightning strikes. Along with disruption to surface traffic, flight operations were also badly affected during the afternoon and evening hours. A total of 13 flights had to go around, out of which 11 were diverted to neighbouring airports. Departure and arrival schedules were disturbed, and the cascading effect persisted for several hours. More weather activity is likely today and tomorrow.
A western disturbance is moving across the mountains. An induced cyclonic circulation persists over Central Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan. A few other small-scale circulations, typical of pre-monsoon heat, are also marked in the neighbourhood of Delhi. The east-west trough is positioned very close to Delhi. It is likely to shift northward gradually and take the rain belt along with it. By June 7, the trough is expected to move to a safe distance away from Delhi.
Delhi-NCR is witnessing cloudy skies, light winds and modest temperatures. Rain and thundershowers are likely during the latter half of the day and at night. The intensity and spread of the activity will reduce tomorrow, and only remnant weather activity is expected on Sunday. Broad improvement in weather conditions is likely from Monday onward. Day temperatures will remain suppressed and hover around 35°C (±1°C) through the weekend. Temperatures are likely to rise again next week and may touch 40°C.
