Torrential rains, landslides disrupt life in Silchar, Assam

May 18, 2016 1:06 PM |

Rain in Northeast IndiaSilchar received 211 mm of rainfall during last 24 hours. This figure is the highest one-day rainfall in last 10 years but not as much as the all-time highest value of 290.3 mm, recorded in May 30, 1893.

Northeast generally receives very heavy rains during this time of the year. The monthly mean is also quite high at 460.7 mm.

During last 10 years, the city had received over 100 mm of rainfall four times in just 24 hours. Therefore, heavy to very heavy rainfall is not uncommon over this part of India. Pre-Monsoon showers are mostly very severe over the area due to hilly terrain and continuous moisture feed from Bay of Bengal.

At present, there is also a cyclonic circulation hovering over Bihar and a trough from this system is extending up to Northeastern states. Moderate southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are increasing moisture over the region as well.

During the pre-Monsoon, season particularly in month of May, convective clouds known as cumulonimbus clouds develop over Silchar and adjoining areas. Due to instability in the atmosphere, the top of the clouds sometimes reach 14 to 16 km above the ground level. Thus, they bear the potential to pour heavy to very heavy rainfall over a limited area. The rainfall activity is further enhanced as the movement of clouds in such hilly terrains is not very fast. Therefore, they deplete all the water content over a limited area leading to extremely heavy rainfall.

Assam has received widespread rainfall. Other places to receive good showers in the state include Dhubri 50.6 mm, Lumding 34.6 mm, Golaghat 34.4 mm and Tezpur 28.2 mm.

Torrential and incessant rains have triggered heavy landslides. This led to disruption of rail services in southern Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram.
