Unseasonal rains are coming up for most parts of Maharashtra in the next 3-4 days. The wet spell will be prominent to mild over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha in that order between 05th January to 08th January. Konkan region will be mildest of all with isolated and light rain particularly over the southern parts of the region.
The state of Maharashtra generally remains far from reach of western disturbance and their induced systems. Also, the state is far deep to get influenced by the easterly wave affecting the Southern Peninsula. The normal monthly rainfall of January for Mumbai, Pune, Sangli, Satara, Osmanabad, Latur and most other places is zero or less than 1 mm. Rainfall over the region is invariably under the influence of multiple weather systems.
Presently an active western disturbance is marked over Jammu and Kashmir and its induced circulation over Rajasthan. The seasonal anti-cyclone has been pushed far to the east over Chhattisgarh and Odisha. With the convergence of winds from the Arabian Sea and the anticyclone, a feeble cyclonic circulation is likely to form over North Madhya Maharashtra with a trough extension southward off the coast. This feature will persist with minor oscillation over the region for the next 3-4 days.
Light to moderate rain and thundershower is expected over Pune, Sangli, Satara, Sholapur, Kolhapur, Jeur, Osmanabad, Beed, Buldhana, Aurangabad, Parbhani, Amravati and Akola in the next 3-4 days. The weather activity may not be simultaneous at all places and may take turns during this period. The untimely activity of this nature is marred with the risk of having hailstorm in few pockets. While rains may be considered as a good omen, hailstorm as such is not welcome for the crops.
