Unseasonal Rains In Gujarat, No Respite From Heat Likely

May 13, 2024 3:10 PM |

State of Gujarat observes hot and dry conditions during the pre-monsoon season, from March to May. The region remains far from the reach of weather systems of North India and therefore, remains free from typical thunderstorm/dust storm activity of northern plains.  H0wever, an exception will be made and parts of the state will witness light rain for the next 3 days, commencing today.  North & Central Gujarat and Parts of Saurashtra will be favourite for this untimely weather activity.

State has been reeling under extreme hot conditions for the last many days.  Places like Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, Rajkot and Bhuj clocked 43°C and sizzling heat.  Coastal stations, though have lesser temperatures but increased discomfort with high humidity.  Some, unseasonal rains are likely, light and scattered though, over Saurashtra and interiors of central parts.  Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar has not seen a spell of rain and shower for over one month.  These rains may break the jinx alright, but will not provide any relief from the searing heat.

Confluence of winds, of two different  types, will cause this wet spell.   There is an anticyclone over north and central Arabian Sea, pumping moist winds over the coast and interior parts of the state. Also, drier winds from the north, across Rajasthan and border areas are penetrating deep inland.  The meeting of two different airmass, aided by the local heat, will have sporadic showers in some parts.

Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Baroda, Surat, Rajkot, Mahuva, Bhavnagar and Amreli are likely to have light showers on 13th & 14thMay. The remnant effect may leave absolutely light and isolated sprinkle, the next day.  However, the heat will persist around and mercury may even soar to register temperatures between 42°-44°C, in the interiors of the state, including the state capital Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.Attendee panel closed
