Landlocked subdivision of Maharashtra, Vidarbha has been the hottest pocket of the country during the last two days. Heat wave conditions have prevailed on account of day temperatures in excess of 44°C at many places, including Nagpur, the third largest city of the state and the winter capital of Maharashtra. Chandrapur was the hottest place in the country, recording highest maximum of 44.6°C. Also, this was the highest temperature for the city this season.

The other cities breaching 44°C include:

Akola-44.3°C

Nagpur-44°C

Bramhapuri-44.4°C

Amraoti-44.4°C

Wardha-44°C

Chandrapur-44.6°C

The contiguous parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Telangana are equally hot, at 44°C. Heat is unlikely to relent, and searing conditions are expected to continue for the next 4-5 days.

Earlier, border posts of West Rajasthan and deep inland stations of Gujarat were the hottest places in the country. The main reason was the transported heat from across  the border, where the temperatures in Pakistan breached 49°C.

The locations with scorching heat in Pakistan included:

Nawabshah-49°C

Jacobabad-46°C

Pad Idan-46.4°C

Rohri-46°C

Chhor-45°C

The extreme heat has eased out a bit over the last 2 days due to weather activity in the plains and mountains of North Pakistan. Accordingly, the temperatures have dropped marginally over Gujarat and Rajasthan as well.

A long trough is likely to extend from Chhattisgarh to down south, up to border areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, across Telangana, Vidarbha, North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. This feature will persist for the next 4-5 days. The trough will restrict the reach of warm and moist winds from the coastline to the landlocked subdivision of Vidarbha. On the other hand, the western disturbance will clear the northern parts in another 24 hours.

Following this, dry and hot winds will blow across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and reach subdivisions of Vidarbha and MarathwadaHeat wave conditions are likely to persist for the next 4-5 days. Vidarbha, Marathwada, Telangana are likely to be the hottest pockets of the country. No relief in terms of pre-monsoon thunderstorms or showers is expected over the next one week.
