West coast and Gujarat to receive heavy rain for 72hrs; Delhi too may get rain

July 24, 2013 3:18 PM |

After central India, the rest of India is taking turns to receive heavy rains. 216mm of rain in Mumbai in the last 24hours has left everyone appalled. Latest weather forecasts show that rain and flooding woes are expected to trouble not just Mumbai but the entire west coast of India and parts of Gujarat. “Our weather models are showing exceptional rain in Gujarat for another 72hours. Rain could be up to 100mm or more at many locations of south and coastal Gujarat as a strong monsoon surge from the Arabian Sea seems to be affecting the state. Mumbai, Konkan and Goa may continue to have heavy rain of up to 100mm due to the same surge for another two days. Rain may reduce afterwards”, says Mahesh Palawat, Head of the weather forecasting team at Skymet Weather.

In the last 24-48 hours only a few pockets of south Gujarat have received good rain. Main cities like Surat and Ahmedabad have gone mainly dry. Veraval recorded 47mm of rain whereas Surat recorded 11mm of light rain. Ahmedabad recorded traces of rainfall.

Further, the entire west coast of peninsular India is also showing signs of good rain. The monsoon surge from the Arabian Sea may feed moisture to Karnataka where rain could be mainly moderate with heavy of up to 50mm in some pockets. Kerala may not receive heavy or very heavy rain but moderate rains will still keep the rainfall figures for the month of July above normal by about 50%.

Besides this, people in Delhi and north India may again see some rain. Drier days may disappear, though again for a short span of time. Mainly light to moderate rain could occur in isolated pockets of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, west Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on the 26th of July. “

“There is good news especially for the people of Rajasthan. Entire Rajasthan, except the northern parts, could have moderate rain on the 26th and 27th of July because of an oscillation of the monsoon trough and the moisture from the Arabian Sea. The city of lakes, Udaipur could get packed with tourists once again as rain may lash the city. Places like Kota, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Jaipur could also get good rain of up to 30mm”, added Mahesh Palawat.

“We are quite happy with our predictions of rain this year. The month of July has been tough on some areas but the rain figures indicate that on a whole, the monsoon season has showered good rains at most places, barring some parts of east and most parts of northeast India”, talks Jatin Singh, CEO of Skymet Weather Services.
