Western Disturbance gives light rain in J&k, heavy in Pakistan

jammu rain CroppedWestern Disturbance is the main system affecting weather in north India and adjoining Pakistan during winters. The system is usually mild in October and picks up pace from November. December and February are the most active months of Western Disturbances.

Though, there is still 4 days before November begins and there is significant impact of the weather system, some rain is already being observed in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Neighbouring Pakistan has recorded some very heavy in the last 24 hours. Parachinar has observed unprecedented heavy rain of 202 mm. Jhelum and Saidu Sharif too have received heavy rain of 130 mm and 36 mm respectively. Such amounts of rain are usually not observed in these places during the month of October in Pakistan.

However, the impact of the Western Disturbance has not been very significant in Jammu and Kashmir as the state has recorded only light rain in the last 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Monday. Gulmarg has recorded 3.6 mm of rain, Kupwara 6.2 mm and Katra 2.5 mm.

The weather system is going to prevail in the region for another 48 hours after which the minimums in the plains of North India are going to drop by 1-2 degrees. Till then minimums will remain close to normal or marginally above normal.

Till the system is active in the region, there are chances of some rain in the plains as well, especially in Punjab.
