Western Disturbance gives moderate rain over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh

Rain in ManaliA Western Disturbance with moderate intensity has been affecting the hilly region of North India. The weather system is giving widespread light to moderate rain over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. While, northern plains remain unaffected.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the system is currently prevailing over Jammu and Kashmir and is moving eastwards.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir recorded 22.4 mm of rain, Kokernag 17.1 mm, Banihal 16.4, Kupwara 15.2, Qazigund 10.1 mm, Gulmarg 10 mm, Srinagar 8.7 mm, Batote 8.2 mm, Bhaderwah 5.2 mm and Katra 2.6 mm.

In Himachal Pradesh, Kalpa received 18.4 mm of rain, followed by Keylong 16 mm, Manali 15 mm and Kullu 2.8 mm. While rainfall was light and scattered in Uttarakhand where Uttarkashi observed 2 mm of rain, Tehri 1.5 mm and Pithoragarh 0.2 mm.

However, the intensity and spread of rain will start reducing now as we expect the Western Disturbance to clear away in next 24 hours.

In wake of the system, both maximum and minimum temperatures have registered a drop and are now settling two to eight degrees below the normal average.

According to Skymet, temperatures will continue to hover below normal average for next 24 hours. And as the system moves away, temperatures will once again crawl back to normal.

Another Western Disturbance is approaching North India and is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir by May 29 or 30. Following this, temperatures will drop once again.

The above weather system would be of moderate intensity and might give weather over northwestern plains, along with the hilly states.
