For a day, it felt that the definition of a hill station and plains have interchanged themselves when the temperature of Pune was lesser than the temperature of Shimla.
On November 11, Pune recorded minimum of 9.4°C which was the lowest since 2012 and as per the records, it was only on 2 occasions in a decade, that the temperature for Pune dropped down to 9.4°C. However, on the same day, Shimla witnessed the temperatures of 9.8°C which was marginally more than Pune.
Reason for the weather abnormalities between temperature of plains and hills can be attributed to the weather contradiction.
As per Skymet Weather, a Western Disturbance was passing over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh leading to cloud cover and change in wind direction. Therefore, due to greenhouse effect, temperature of Shimla increased and settled at 4°C above its normal.
On the other hand, cool winds from the north and northeast region of the country were also blowing over Madhya Maharashtra including Pune. Hence, temperature in Madhya Maharashtra dropped significantly due to continuous cold wind and clear skies.
Clear skies usually help in releasing the earth’s energy during night in the form of long wave radiation thus leading to cooling down of the earth surface rapidly. This further leads to lower minimums which was the case in Pune and Ahmednagar which recorded the temperature of 7.1°C.
On the contrary, during a cloudy night, these long wave radiations get trapped between earth's surface and cloud leading to increase in temperature like that was in Shimla.
However, at present, the Western Disturbance has moved away leading to clear skies over Shimla. Thus, in last 24 hours, temperature recorded in Shimla was 7.4°C. Moreover, the cold northerly winds are now obstructed by a formation of a cyclonic circulation over Haryana and therefore the temperature of Pune has increased to 13.2°C.
Hence, in a nutshell, it can be said that the meteorological conditions play a significant role in altering weather conditions of any particular place.
