Widespread rain in Jammu and Kashmir

After experiencing high maximum temperatures for a few days, the state of Jammu and Kashmir received welcome widespread rain over the weekend. As predicted by Skymet Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain activity was witnessed over entire Jammu and Kashmir with heavy fall at isolated places.

A fresh western disturbance, which was lingering over the region, has finally provided rain over several areas of the state. Rainfall recorded in various parts (till 8.30 am IST on Sunday) of the state is as follows: Banihal 24.8 mm, Batote 13.7 mm, Bhaderwah 6.8 mm, Gulmarg 61.6 mm, Jammu 13.4 mm, Katra 34.8 mm, Kokernag 13.5 mm, Kupwara 57.8 mm, Pahalgam 47.2 mm, Qazigund 21.6 mm, and Srinagar 43.8 mm.

Rain in the region has brought down day temperatures which were recorded above normal on March 26 and 27.  Fresh snow is also expected in the region over the next 24 hours. The system is expected to affect the region for the next 48 hours or so.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir had been experiencing clear weather conditions towards the end of March. This was after incessant rain and snow had closed down the Jammu-Srinagar highway. But with the return of rain and snow, it does seem that March will end on a cooler note for the valley and its residents.
