Winter chill to make a comeback over Delhi

Winter chill to make a comeback over DelhiThis winter has been slightly different as compared to the others. The sun hasn’t played too much of a hide and seek, overcoats remained inside the closet for most of December, and fog was not an excuse for coming late at work.

December and January are the two months when winter is at its peak. The month of January is the most severe of all. Usually, the minimums range between 7 to 9 degrees in the month of December. During the first ten days, the minimums are recorded around 9 degrees, while during mid-December, the minimums hover around 8 degrees and by the end it drops down to 7 degrees.

The minimums continue to hover around 7 degrees in January and marginally increases towards the end of the month. However, this season, December ended on a warmer note and the minimums hovered around 9 degrees throughout the month against the monthly average of 8 degrees.

Usually, December witnesses about 11 to 12 days of fog with four days of very low visibility. This season, dense fog was only observed on one day in December which resulted in air traffic disruptions.

This season, Delhi recorded the driest December since the year 2008. Only 0.2 mm rainfall was recorded during the entire month. All in all, Delhi still awaits very cold mornings and chilly nights. Temperatures have been recording above normal for quite some time now.

However, winter chill is likely to return to the national capital in a few days now.  Another Western Disturbance is likely to affect the hills of North India around January 7, and when it moves away temperatures will take a dip in the national capital. On January 7, Delhi might receive a few rain showers as well. Also, Delhiites may wake up to foggy mornings on January 5 and 6.

Thus after January 8, winter chill will return to the city. Temperatures, which are above normal will fall down significantly during this time.
