Rain in Kolkata to increase winter chill

Winter chill to set in over Kolkata

Updated on December 18, 2015: Unseasonal rains of light intensity have been recorded over Kolkata during the last 24 hours. And as this rainy spell continues for the next 24 hours, maximum temperatures are expected to come down significantly on December 18.

Dum Dum Observatory in Kolkata recorded 8 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours beginning from 8:30 am on Thursday.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, this is the first spell of winter rains over the city. The activity can be attributed to the conversion of cold and dry winds coming in from northern region with warm and humid winds from Bay of Bengal.

Although, minimum temperatures have increased, the maximum temperatures have come down. As a result, diurnal variation between the minimum and maximum temperatures have decreased. With this, people of Kolkata will witness cold weather conditions throughout the day on Friday.

As per Skymet, this rain spell is expected to end by Saturday thus paving the way for clear weather conditions in the city.

Updated on December 17, 2015: Long awaited winters have finally set in Kolkata. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, minimum temperatures have dropped significantly across West Bengal including Kolkata in span of last two days.

Some places have also recorded single digit temperatures.

On Thursday morning, Kolkata recorded minimum temperature of 11.5°C that is two degrees below normal.

As per Skymet, northerly and northeasterly winds blowing over the region are responsible for the fall of night temperatures over West Bengal and parts of East India.

As per the forecast by Skymet, minimum temperatures will continue to drop further during next 24 hours, though dip will be a marginal one.

Updated on December 14, 2015: The state of West Bengal has a variety of terrain. While the northern parts of the state have a hilly effect due to its location, the western part of the state experiences weather like the plains. As the southern part of the state is located close to the sea, the region has a coastal effect.

During the month of December, the capital city of West Bengal, Kolkata experiences a wintry chill. The monthly average for minimums in Kolkata stands at 14.7°C. Until the month of November, the minimums remain in the 20s. However, there is a dip of around 5 degrees in the minimums during December.

By mid-December mornings get chilly, and nights also get slightly cold. However, this year Kolkata has not yet experienced wintry conditions. By this time, only a few active Western Disturbances have affected the hills and plains of North India. But, the system has not affected parts of East India yet.

The States of Bihar and West Bengal are yet to witness winter like conditions. Kolkata has also been observing pleasant weather conditions with above normal temperatures till now. Almost half of December has passed away with no change in weather conditions over the city of joy.

There has been a marginal dip in the minimums during the last 24 hours. However, the temperatures continue to be above normal. Heavy snowfall in the hills of North India has resulted in cold wave conditions over some pockets of North India.

As per Skymet Meteorology Division in India, in the coming days, Kolkata will also experience wintry chill with a significant dip in minimums. The temperatures will drop down to normal further resulting in below normal temperatures as well.
