Shillong
Overview
Shilling, the capital of Meghalaya takes its name from the deity Shilling or Lei Shilling. This city used to be the capital of Assam for over century since 1874 till Meghalaya became a separate state. The city is based on an elevated swathe, which lays almost 1500 meters above the sea level. The seasons here could be divided into three sections. Summer, Monsoon and winter.

The winter season from November to February are freezing cold and minimum temperature reaches about 0°C. Fog formations for short durations are common during winter.
Summers in Shillong
Summers begin in March and go on till June. One would experience a maximum temperature of 24°C and a minimum temperature of 15°C providing a cool vacation environment.
Monsoon in Shillong
The monsoons arrive in June and it rains almost till mid October. The annual rainfall is around 200 cm making this a very wet hill station.
Places to see in Shillong
Best time to visit is October, November and between March and April. Shilling is famous for a number of its waterfalls like Elephant falls and Beadon falls. The Butterfly museum is an amusing sight with its finest and rarest species of butterflies and moths. The Lewduh market or the Bara Bazaar, is one huge colorful jamboree. Generally recommended to every newcomer as the first place to be visited upon arrival the Lewduh market sees an influx of peddlers across Meghalaya advertising and trading their wares.
