A spiritual and cultural center for the Sikhs, Amritsar is located in the state of Punjab and is home to Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple. The city is a very popular tourist destination, with over 100,000 people visiting the place every week. This is more than the number of people visiting the Taj Mahal. The Wagah Border (Indo-Pak border) which is just 28 kilometers from the city is also a very popular tourist spot.
Amritsar observes a semiarid climate, which is the characteristic of northwest India.

The Jalliawalan Bagh houses a memorial to commemorate the massacre carried out by British troops on thousands of unarmed innocent people.
