Delhi/NCR recorded very light rainfall yesterday. Thinning of clouds for some time in the afternoon led to a rise in the day temperature. The base observatory at Safdarjung recorded 0.3 mm of rainfall and a day high of 35.1°C, a rise of 4.5°C from the previous day. The mercury may further rise to around 37°C today. The chance of rain is not significant, yet a light sprinkle in some pockets cannot be ruled out.

July is the second rainiest month for Delhi, after August. The city has a normal rainfall of 195.8 mm. Earlier, based on 30 years of data between 1971 and 2000, the average rainfall for July was 214.2 mm. The current rainfall figures are based on data from 1991 to 2020. Generally, the month of July has performed well for the national capital. Without fail, the city recorded above-normal rainfall for seven consecutive years, between 2018 and 2024. The heaviest rainfall in the recent past was 507.1 mm in July 2021. Incidentally, the monsoon had arrived quite late in Delhi that year, on 13th July. Over the last 15 years, since 2010, Delhi has achieved more than its quota on 11 occasions, having a remarkable success rate. The highest ever rainfall for the city in the month of July was 632 mm, recorded in 2003.

Seasonal rainfall over Delhi is largely controlled by the monsoon trough, which normally runs from Ganganagar to Kolkata, maintaining proximity to Delhi and passing south of the national capital. Currently, the monsoon trough is connecting two cyclonic circulations, one on either shore of the country. One circulation is marked over Central and South Rajasthan, and the other is the remnant of a low-pressure area over Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. As the second circulation moves westward along the trough, it will oscillate north-south.

The trough will maintain a safe distance from Delhi today and tomorrow. Therefore, rainfall, if any, will be light, patchy, and of short duration. The chances are rather low. The trough will start shifting northward from Friday onwards. Accordingly, cloud cover may increase and become denser. Over the weekend, conditions will become favourable for significant monsoon activity. The spread and intensity of rainfall will be greater on Saturday and Sunday. The rainy spell may even spill over into the start of next week. Persistent cloud cover and intermittent rains will lower day temperatures and improve the comfort index between 5th and 9th July 2025.
