Punjab Monsoon 2025: Early Onset Brings Steady Rains; Doaba and Majha Regions on Alert for Heavy Showers This Weekend
The Southwest Monsoon arrived over Punjab by June 25, well ahead of its usual schedule. Since then, the state has witnessed regular and widespread rainfall, with Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Pathankot, and Jalandhar reporting moderate showers almost daily. These early and consistent rains have set the tone for an active monsoon phase in northern India.
The upcoming weekend, July 5 and 6, could mark a significant intensification, particularly over Doaba and Majha regions—both historically prone to heavier monsoon spells.
Focus Areas: Why Doaba and Majha Matter
Weather indicators point toward a renewed surge in monsoon activity across the northwestern plains. In Punjab, the Doaba region, located between the Beas and Sutlej rivers, includes key districts such as Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr). These areas are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall during the weekend.
Likewise, the Majha region—comprising Amritsar, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran—is likely to come under intense monsoon showers. Localized flooding, waterlogging, and transport delays are possible, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained zones.
Rainfall Overview and Regional Impact
Throughout the last week of June and into early July, rainfall has remained consistent across Punjab. Amritsar and Ludhiana have both seen frequent spells, helping lower daytime temperatures and improving soil moisture conditions crucial for kharif sowing.
The monsoon’s early push has also impacted Chandigarh, where June ended with the wettest day in 52 years, recording 119.5 mm of rain on June 30. The rainfall paralyzed daily life in the tricity, exposing infrastructural gaps across internal roads, colonies, and major arterial routes.
As monsoon systems continue to oscillate and interact with other atmospheric triggers, parts of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh may also see scattered moderate showers during this period.
Outlook for the Week Ahead
With multiple systems supporting the monsoon trough’s position near the northern plains, rainfall is expected to continue at a steady to heavy pace over the next 5 to 7 days. However, Doaba and Majha will remain the hotspots, with rainfall peaking between July 5 and 6.
Residents, especially in flood-prone districts, are advised to stay weather-aware, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours, and ensure basic safety protocols during intense rain periods.
