Sticky Weekend For Delhi: Monsoon Showers Next Week
Delhi/NCR witnessed dry weather conditions for the fifth consecutive day. In the absence of clouds, the temperature rose yet again to cross 35°C at Safdarjung, for the second successive day. Today, the surface and low-level winds are stronger and so, the temperature may just fall short of 35°C. Similar conditions are likely during this week. Sultry and muggy conditions will prevail, and the approaching weekend will not be any different. No rainfall is likely till Sunday, 14th Sep 2025.
Month of September has stable weather conditions. The day temperature mostly hangs around 34°C and drops to the low 30s in October. The morning temperature does show a gradual drop from 25°C at the start, to about 23°C at the end of the month. However, there are incidents when the temperature has breached the 40°C mark. The maximum temperature was 40.1°C on 05th Sep 2023. The highest-ever mercury of 40.6°C was recorded way back, on 16 Sep 1938.
The capital city has recorded 85 mm rainfall between 01st and 10th Sep 2025. It rained on the first three days of the month and turned dry thereafter. Rains are unlikely during this week, but the next week looks promising for relief monsoon showers. On account of changeability of monsoon withdrawal dates, the rainfall variability remains quite high in the month of September. There were occasions when the month nearly ended dry, as it happened in 2015 & 2020, and literally got drowned a couple of times, even in the recent past (2021 & 2010).

The monsoon trough is the main trigger for the rainfall over Delhi. Currently, the trough is running far south of its normal position and therefore, not conducive for any seasonal showers. There is a monsoon system, as cyclonic circulation over Coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. This may become a low-pressure area after 48 hours. Ingress of this system, deep inland over Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra and Rajasthan by the end of this week, will bring a twist in the weather conditions. The shift of the monsoon trough close to Delhi and, coupled with an interaction of western disturbance, relief showers are expected around the middle of next week.
