The first week of May 2025 has witnessed a fair amount of pre-monsoon activity over most parts of the country. West Rajasthan and Gujarat were under siege of extreme heat around the last week of April, and so were parts of Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

Courtesy, multiple weather systems influencing weather conditions over large parts, the heat wave remained abated over the country during the first week of May. The trend even continues during the second week as well.

In the past 24 hours, there has been no heat wave across the country. The highest temperature of 41°C was recorded over the country at Jaisalmer, and this was below normal by about a degree. All other hot places over West Rajasthan, like Barmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Phalodi, have registered day temperatures about 4°–5°C below the normal.

There were very few stations on the list with a day high of 40°C or more. These locations include Jaisalmer—41°C, Gaya—40.2°C, Adilabad—40°C, and Daltonganj—40°C. All these temperatures are within their normal range or below. Practically, no heat wave is prevailing over any part of the country. Yes, the temperatures are likely to rise and may amount to a mild heat wave in small pockets.

The pre-monsoon activity is likely to reduce in intensity and scale during the next week. The rise in temperature, albeit temporarily, is expected over the eastern parts and the central peninsula. The state of Gujarat will also find clearance in unseasonal weather activity, but the mercury is unlikely to shoot straightaway.

The most vulnerable states will be Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Odisha. The locations at risk will include Adilabad, Khammam, Ramagundam, Bhadrachalam, Anantapur, Kurnool, and Kadapa over the Peninsular India.

Interiors of Odisha and farther parts of West Bengal, closer to Jharkhand and Bihar, will also have temperatures in the low to mid-40s. Prominent places are Angul, Sambalpur, Titlagarh, Balangir, Asansol, Bankura, Midnapore, Kalaikunda, Panagarh and Purulia.

A fresh round of pre-monsoon activity over these parts, commencing around the next weekend, will mitigate the heat stress over the region yet again.
