Key Takeaways:

  • Delhi/NCR received light February rain after nearly three weeks of dry weather.
  • Intermittent showers and an isolated afternoon thundershower are likely today.
  • Cloudiness and winter showers will extend across North and Central India due to lingering circulation.
  • Weather will clear tomorrow, with temperatures rising toward 30°C by the weekend.

Delhi finally broke the jinx of a dry spell in the month of February. Nearly three weeks into the month, most parts of Delhi/NCR received the welcome showers. As expected, clouding developed late in the night, but rainfall began early in the morning before sunrise. Light rainfall is continuing, and more showers are likely during the day. The round of thundershowers in the afternoon could be sharp and intense. Weather activity will remain off and on till late in the night.

Base station Safdarjung recorded 0.2 mm of rainfall, while the Palam observatory recorded a slightly higher 0.9 mm till 8:30 a.m. Other parts of NCR such as Noida, Faridabad, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad also received light to moderate rainfall. Light rain and showers are likely to continue through the day with intermittent breaks. One spell of thundershower of moderate intensity is expected a little later in the afternoon. Complete cessation of activity will occur past midnight hours.

The western disturbance will clear the hilly states early today. However, the cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining parts will linger. Delhi and contiguous parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh will remain cloudy and witness winter showers today. Activity over Rajasthan had already begun yesterday, with northern, central, and northeastern parts of the state receiving decent showers. Alwar recorded 20 mm of rainfall till 8:30 a.m. As cloud tops are extending beyond 25,000 feet, conditions remain favourable for isolated hailstorm activity.

Day temperatures are likely to drop to the low 20s, while night temperatures will remain above normal in the low teens. Broad clearance in weather activity is expected tomorrow from the early hours of the day. The maximum temperature will rise to around 30°C again by the approaching weekend. No sharp drop in mercury is expected during the early morning hours.
