Dry Weather Conditions In Delhi During First Half Of February, Mercury Drop Likely
Feb 5, 2025, 3:15 PM | Skymet Weather TeamWinter rainfall in Delhi has rather been poor so far. The month of January registered a mere 6.5 mm of rainfall against the normal of about 20 mm. Not a single day of cold wave conditions in the month. Dense fog also remained infrequent. Day temperatures were above normal during the second half of the month. The lowest minimum temperature was 4.8°C, recorded on 08th Jan, the only day in the month with a temperature under 5°C. Overall, the month of January 2025 was the warmest one in the last 5 years. Mean monthly day and night temperatures were recorded above normal by about 1°C each.
The western disturbance across the mountains and its induced system in the plains resulted in very light rainfall over the last two days. The spell was inadequate and insufficient too, to reduce the margin of deficit. The weather system has already exited from the plains and will vacate the mountains as well tomorrow. Following this, the mercury is likely to dip, possibly to single digits, between 07th and 09th Feb.
Another western disturbance is approaching the Western Himalayan region on 08th Feb. The northern mountains will have an extended spell of weather activity between the 08th and 14th Feb, albeit, visibly more during 09th-11th Feb. The rain and snow will remain confined to the hills and, at best, the foothills of Punjab and Haryana. Delhi will remain on the far peripheral zone and at a safe distance for any significant weather activity. The best-case scenario will have a cloudy sky on the 9th and 10th Feb, partially restricting the sunshine.
January and February, together, form the rainiest months of the winter season. The month of January, as such, witnessed a large deficit; it is difficult to catch up now. The month of February also does not look promising. The first half of the month will not see any more rains. The dry spell may extend beyond the first fortnight. Earlier, the month of February had remained completely dry in 2017, 2018 and 2023. The winter rainfall for the country may also figure as the lowest in the last one decade or so.
