Heavy Monsoon rain in Uttar Pradesh to continue; floods in northern districts likely

Rain in Uttar Pradesh

Monsoon made a delayed onset over the state of Uttar Pradesh. In fact, even after the onset of Monsoon, weather conditions in Uttar Pradesh remained almost dry till later parts of July. Due to which Uttar Pradesh had become the most rain deficient state till last week.

Later on, when a low-pressure area developed over Uttar Pradesh and the axis of Monsoon trough shifted northwards and was passing through Uttar Pradesh, heavy to very heavy rains occurred over the state.

Since then, on and off Monsoon showers are continuing almost all parts of the Uttar Pradesh. During the last 24 hours also, Lucknow recorded 41 mm of rain, followed by Moradabad 29 mm, Bahraich and Fursatganj 23 mm and Gorakhpur 11 mm.

At present, a low-pressure area has developed over Odisha Coast and is likely to move west/northwestwards. Moreover, the western end of the axis of Monsoon trough is also passing through northern parts of Uttar Pradesh. Therefore, we expect fairly widespread rainfall activity over Uttar Pradesh during the next two to three days. Moderate to heavy rains with rains will continue.

We also expect heavy to very heavy rains over the hills of Nepal. Thus, the combined effect of heavy rains over Nepal and Uttar Pradesh may lead to flooding in northern districts of the state such as Farukabad, Bijnore, Gonda, Bahraich, Lakhimpur, Sitapur, Pilibhit, Barabanki and Mau.
