State of West Bengal votes in the second and final phase of Assembly elections today. The voting is going on across 142 constituencies of the eastern half of Gangetic West Bengal. The seven districts of the state include Kolkata, Howrah, North & South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Hooghly and Purba Bardhaman. As predicted earlier, the capital city Kolkata, along with other districts, is witnessing intermittent rain and thunderstorms right since morning. The cloud cover has provided relief from the heat but persistent thundershowers are raising difficulty for the common man. More showers are ahead for the day and also during this week.
Multiple factors have joined to keep the wet weather going over most parts of the polling constituencies. A cyclonic circulation is marked over Bangladesh in the lower levels. An east-west trough extending from the Indo-Gangetic plains runs through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and further east through Bangladesh. Anticyclonic winds over the North Bay of Bengal and Coastal Odisha are pushing a lot of moisture over the state and Northeast India. The entire region including West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Sikkim, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya and the other northeastern states will have fairly widespread rain and thundershowers with heavy rainfall over Sikkim, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Assam.
Kolkata was observing persistent dry weather conditions between 17th and 27th April 2026. However, the last two days saw light rain and thundershowers pounce on the city and suburbs. These are likely to continue through the day with short breaks in between. More showers are ahead for the city and neighbourhood during this week. The showers could go heavier over the next two days and also be accompanied by strong surface winds. There are no signs of any broad clearance coming up for the next one week.
