Key Takeaways:

  • Delhi will see prolonged intermittent rain from April 3 to 8
  • Peak activity expected on April 3–4 and April 7–8
  • Thunderstorms, gusty winds, lightning, and possible hail likely
  • Temperatures to stay below normal for about a week

Month of April opened its account with normal day temperature yesterday. Base station Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 33.5°C, below normal by a whisker. The aftereffect of showers of the previous day restricted its rise, despite favourable conditions. Today, the temperature is likely to shoot up and may cross 36°C. It is likely to be a bright and sunny day with scattered patches of high clouds. However, the clouds are likely to thicken at night, as a precursor to a wet spell coming up on the long weekend between Friday and Sunday. The temperatures are likely to dip to the low 30s for the subsequent 6–7 days.

A Western Disturbance is marked as an upper air system over North Afghanistan and the adjoining Pakistan region. A deep trough is extending from this area to the North Arabian Sea. Another Western Disturbance will follow and reach the Western Himalayas on 07th April 2026. This pair of Western Disturbances will influence weather activity over North India, including Delhi, between 03rd and 08th April.

Delhi will have a prolonged spell of intermittent rainfall, starting tomorrow and lasting till mid-week next. Peak weather activity, like the last spell, will occur between 03rd & 04th April and again on 07th & 08th April. In between, the residual effect of the two Western Disturbances will lead to lean and mild thunderstorm activity, accompanied by fleeting showers for a brief duration. Weather activity will include thunderstorm/dust storm accompanied by gusty winds, lightning, thundershowers, and loud peals of thunder with frequent flashes from tall clouds.

There is a likelihood of hailstorm in some areas. Exercise caution for strong winds and inclement weather. It is better to avoid exposure during lightning strikes and roaring thunder. Day temperatures will go down below normal for nearly one week before broad clearance is expected from 09th April onwards. After the passage of the system, strong surface winds are likely between 09th and 11th April. These will restrict any abrupt rise in temperatures. The capital city has already recorded 9 mm rainfall on the first day and will go past its monthly normal of 12.5 mm by a big margin during this wet spell.
