The plains and mountains of North India witnessed rain and snow yesterday.  Parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh received fairly widespread, light to moderate winter showers, after a gap of nearly two weeks. The mid and higher reaches of the mountain states received a fresh bout of snow and rainfall over lower peaks and foothills. The weather activity will continue today and vacate most parts tomorrow.

The western disturbance is now marked over the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh regions. The induced cyclonic circulation has moved over Northwest Rajasthan and the neighbouring Haryana region. Under the combined influence of these two, the wintry weather activity will continue today, as well. The remnant of the system may have residual activity over the mountains and isolated light rainfall over North Rajasthan and Haryana tomorrow. While the activity will cease completely over the plains on the weekend, the hills still find freak occurrences in the higher reaches. A fresh weather system is likely to arrive on 24th-25th Feb over the northern hills.

No hailstorm activity or strong winds were reported over the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Therefore, these winter rains, though mild and scattered, are considered good for the Rabi crops. Even, the snow and rains in the mountains will replenish and recharge the drying water bodies, across the region.  With another western disturbance likely around the start of the next week, the situation will improve further. Back-to-back weather systems will also improve the chances of the postponed ‘Khelo India Winter Games’ to get underway, anytime around the first week of March 2025.
