Meteorologists are expecting the upcoming summer season to be the hottest ever in India. In fact, the year 2016 has been the hottest year ever on record. The only respite from this relenting heat is a sip of cool water that’ll quench your thirst. But if you’re from Delhi, chances are that the water you drink may be unsafe for drinking.

Water samples collected from different areas of Delhi that were tested by MCD. Almost 70% of those water samples were found to be contaminated. Ex-chairman of MCD’s public health committee Dr. VK Monga said, “At least 20% of Delhiites are not getting water which is drinkable by Indian standards.”

National Environmental Engineering Research Institute scientist Sanjeev Goyal was asked by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to conduct water quality tests in the city. Three main causes for water pollution in Delhi were listed out by him. The algal growth & contamination in the water pipes, mingling of sewage water with drinking water due to damages and old water pipes were the chief reasons.

Water pipes running alongside and crossing sewage lines in Delhi drives the maximum amount of contamination. DJB have argued that most of the contamination is due to “old rusted service pipe connections of the consumers.”
