Leasing or buying: How should you get your IPv4?

Leasing or buying IPv4

After the world started realizing that there is an IPv4 shortage crisis, the secondary market for acquiring those address spaces has been booming. People need quite a bit of IP address space to maintain and run their networks, especially in this technological era we’re in. The average prices for IPv4 addresses have been climbing since they first became available to buy and the people with unused IPv4 address spaces know this all too well. However, there is a second option to get those IP addresses, and that is to lease IPv4 address space. Now the question is, which one is better?

How does one lease IPv4 addresses?

In recent times, leasing has become the new purchasing. With leasing, people or organizations are able to use any item or service they please while making a payment intermittently. A car, a home, some sort of machine, or an IPv4 address, you can lease any one of them and it might be the better decision compared to purchasing.

If you do choose to lease an IPv4 address as an alternative to purchasing it, you will need to find a provider that you trust. Anybody who has an IPv4 address that they don’t use and proper registration can create a leasing agreement. However, unless you fully trust this party to not involve you in some sort of fraudulent scheme or have a clean background, it is probably best to partner up with an IP broker so they can do thorough background checks on the selling party. This way you won’t get into any legal trouble or other sorts of messes.

The problem with buying IPv4

If you’re in search to acquire some IPv4 addresses, you will have different reasons. That can be trying to gather as much IP space to run your networks properly or maybe the end goal is to have a nice and easy transition to IPv6 for your networks, both reasons needing some IPv4 address space. The problem is, by trying to purchase the IPv4 you may encounter many difficulties.

One of those difficulties is the whole ownership transfer ordeal, doing this takes some complex work and in order to do it properly, it will also take a bit of time. You’ll want to do this process as delicately as you can because if something goes wrong, trouble will come. Price negotiations are another hassle that you will have to deal with when trying to buy the address space.

Leasing benefits

With leasing, however, you will have quick access to your IPv4 in 24 hours without all of the troubles that come with buying. So any goals or plans you may have for your IPv4 you can get to work on as soon as possible. And with the security of monthly payments, a big investment to get the IPv4s won’t be necessary, as you only pay for the usage of it. The best part is, once you’re done with using the IPv4 address space, you can just terminate the contract and not worry about the whole selling process.
