Active Pre-Monsoon Conditions Over South India Next Week
Mar 28, 2025, 1:23 PM | Skymet Weather TeamThe pre-monsoon season begins in the South Peninsula early in March and gets set well by the end of the month. Northern parts and the Indo-Gangetic plains remain under the influence of westerly systems and therefore invariably skip the extreme heat. This feature was noticeable this year as well. Interiors of Gujarat in the West, parts farther from the coast of Odisha in the east, deep inland stations of Andhra Pradesh, the western half of Telangana, and the landlocked Marathwada and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra figure among the prominent pockets of heat in the month of March. Rajkot in Gujarat and Boudh in Odisha recorded the highest temperature of 43.5°C in mid-March. Kurnool & Anantapur (Rayalaseema), Nizamabad (Telangana), Akola, Chandrapur and Nagpur in Maharashtra recorded the highest maximum of 41°-42°around that period.
After the heat build-up in March and April, the South Peninsula has the precedence of witnessing a prolonged spell of rain and thunderstorms in April. As a precursor to the activity, a cyclonic circulation will form over North Interior Karnataka and South Madhya Maharashtra in the lower levels. Also, the north-south Peninsular India trough, a semi-permanent feature in the pre-monsoon, runs through and through the interiors of the Peninsula. This feature oscillates east-west, increasing the spread of weather activity.
The above features are likely to come up and persist for the entire week, between 31st March and 6th April 2025. The intensity and spread will be large on 03rd and 04th April. Due to the elevated Western Ghats, the activity will be fierce and forceful along Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Goa and South Konkan. Intense and strong thunderstorms are likely over South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru and Mysuru and the interiors of Tamil Nadu, bordering Kerala. Overall, the weather activity during this spell will cover the states of Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Konkan & Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The peripherals of the activity, albeit on a weaker note, will cover South Odisha and South Chhattisgarh also. The first week of April is likely to start on a cool note for the South Peninsula.
