Active Pre-Monsoon Over Northwest India, Thunderstorm-Hailstorm Likely
May 2, 2025, 1:24 PM | Skymet Weather TeamA western disturbance has arrived over North India. A series of small-scale cyclonic circulations are marked over Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and the Delhi region. The main circulation over the trijunction of South Punjab, North Rajasthan and West Haryana, coupled with the upper air trough of the western disturbance, has triggered fairly widespread rain and thundershowers over the plains of North India in the past 24 hours. Active pre-monsoon conditions are likely over most parts for the next 4-5 days.
Most parts of Northern states received stormy activity yesterday and lasting till morning hours today. The prominent locations are Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, Patiala, Chandigarh, Ambala, Karnal, Rohtak, Hisar, Ganganagar, Pilani, Ajmer, Jaisalmer, Sikar, Bhilwara, and Tonk. Earlier, Jaisalmer had recorded the highest temperature of 46.7°C in the country. In view of this weather activity, the temperatures are likely to plunge and remain under 40°C at most places. The heat wave will remain abated as more weather is likely on the weekend and the start of next week, as well.
The combination of a western disturbance and a series of cyclonic circulations over Rajasthan Punjab and Haryana will lead to active pre-monsoon conditions over large areas of North India. The weather activity will include hazardous weather conditions with severe thunderstorms, strong gusty winds, hailstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall. The weather activity will last between 02nd and 06th May 2025. The intensity and expanse of weather activity are likely to be damaging and frightening in some areas, more so over Rajasthan and the foothills.
The spread of weather will extend to parts of South Rajasthan and Gujarat between 07th and 09th May 2025. The arid region of Kutch and the extreme western and southern parts of Rajasthan, which normally skip adverse weather, will come in for inclement weather conditions. The places to be watched out for include Barmer, Jaisalmer, Jalore, Sanchor, Sirohi in Rajasthan and Bhuj, Naliya, Lakhpat, Anjar, Rapar, Kandla, Gandhidham, and Mandvi in Kutch. Broad clearance of weather activity over the entire region can take place around 11th May 2025 or later.
